Heavenly Hands Family Medical Clinic Provides Update on Data Breach and Coordinated Actions to Protect Patient Information
March 17, 2021
Heavenly Hands Family Medical Clinic announced that they have detected a potential data breach involving protected patient information. Clinic staff detected that an employee at a third-party medical billing company accessed patient records using another employee’s log-in credentials without the Company’s employee knowledge or permission. Heavenly Hands began mailing letters to all its patients in November 2020 notifying them of the suspected incident, involving unauthorized access to patient records by a third-party medical billing company’s employee, and advising them to be diligent about monitoring their account and credit activity. The database involved contains information, including treatment records, insurance information and contact information about approximately 2500 individuals who received treatment at the clinic. The incident remains under investigation.
“While this is worrisome, we have no evidence that any personal information was extracted, and we believe the incident puts our patients at low risk of identity theft, given the seriousness of the issue, we felt it essential to notify them of the incident,” said Clinic Director L. Ealy. Ealy advised individuals to consider submitting a fraud alert to the three national credit reporting agencies as this will make it more difficult for identity theft to occur.
We discovered this incident on or about September 14, 2020. “We are doing everything we can to prevent this from happening again in the future,” Ealy said, noting that the Clinic is reviewing its vendor agreements, notified its IT service provider, strengthened access controls, updated its privacy and breach response policies, as well notified federal regulatory authorities, as their investigation continues.
Heavenly Hands will provide updates to its patients via the patient portal and website at: hhfmc.org
